Inmate Text App
If you have a friend or family member currently imprisoned, the best option to stay in touch is via an inmate-texting app. These apps are designed to comply with prison regulations and allow family and friends to send messages, pictures video calls, eCards and money to their trust accounts in prison. In addition to these messaging apps, there are several federal inmate apps that offer additional services like video visitation and phone calls.
JPay is one example. It allows family and friends to send money directly to an inmate's trust account. They can also send videos, emails, photos, and eCards. You can also design personalized postcards using their own photos. It is a safer, more secure alternative to regular mail.
Another popular app for texting prisoners is GettingOut. It provides "simple, secure communication" between inmates with their loved ones. The app is available at select correctional facilities and allows prisoners to upload pictures and message family members and friends using their tablets. It costs inmates $0.25 per message, and loved ones pay for the data that is used to read their messages (but not for explicit pictures). You can also use the GettingOut application to share pictures on Facebook text inmate or Foursquare and check-in on Foursquare, and add a video to an YouTube upload.
