If you have a family member who is currently imprisoned, the best option to keep in touch with them is through an inmate texting application. These apps are designed to comply with prison rules and permit family and friends to send messages, photos, video calls, eCards and even money to their trust accounts in prison. There are also federal inmate applications that provide additional services, such as phone calls and video visits.
The JPay app, for example, enables family and friends to easily transfer money to an inmate's trust account, as well as federl inmate texting images, emails, eCards and video grams. It also lets users create personalized postcards with their own images. It's a safer, more secure alternative to postal mail.
Another popular app for texting inmates is GettingOut. It provides "simple reliable, efficient communication" between inmates and their loved ones. The application is available at select correctional facilities and allows prisoners to upload images and text messages to friends and family via their tablets. It costs inmates $0.25 for each message and loved ones pay for the information used to access their messages (but not for explicit photos). You can also make use of the GettingOut application to share pictures on Facebook or Foursquare and check-in on Foursquare and include a video in upload to YouTube upload.
